Typography

Our brand is more powerful when we are consistent in both tone and style. Therefore, use of university approved typefaces is strongly encouraged. Typeface options have been chosen to suit a variety of needs. Options range from traditional to modern. All typeface licensing is at the discretion of each unit, no system licensing exists except for the custom headline font, Connections.

Social Media

About Social Networking

Social networking is the use of web-based tools to interact with other people through text, images, or sound.

Social networking tools should be selected as part of a broader communication plan and used to:

  • Provide easy access to University content and other content relevant to the University’s disciplines.
  • Showcase the University and help build relationships with key audiences.

These requirements and guidelines clarify how social networking can effectively be used for conducting University of Minnesota business.

Print Communications

Requirements

The University requires the following marks or statements on printed materials.

Regents Seal

The Regents Seal (University Seal)

The antique lamp on the seal represents the metaphysical sciences; the telescope, the physical sciences; the plow, the industrial arts; and the pallet with brushes, the fine arts. The motto, written in Latin, means "a common bond for all the arts."

College and Department Logos

The college or department logo is a combination of the university logo and the formal name of a campus unit. This logo version allows an individual college, department, center, institute, or administrative office to identify its affiliation with the university. Units may not develop logos. Existing unapproved unit logos must be phased out (as inventories are depleted for print materials) but may be repurposed as graphic elements.

If you are in need of a logo for our college or department, please contact UMPR.

To download marks, please click on the college or school logo.

Institutional Logos

Download Institutional Logos. To download marks you need to authenticate using your x500 username and password. If you don’t have one, please email us for assistance.

The UMD logo combines three elements: the UMD icon, the wordmark, and the Driven to Discover tag line.

Logos

Consistency in the use of University trademarks, templates, and guidelines strengthen our messaging across campus. University Marketing and Public Relations should be consulted whenever it is not clear whether a proposed use is permissible.

Email

Branding

Many of the same branding rules used for web and print also apply to mass email.

  • Include the University wordmark at the top of a message,
  • Include the wordmark not more than once in the message,
  • Use a wordmark that is a minimum of 220 pixels wide.
  • If not using image, have the “University of Minnesota” prominently placed in the message.

Branded templates and instructions for accessing them are available in Salesforce Marketing Cloud.

Editorial Style

These guidelines have been established to help communicators to create written material that is consistent and professional.
